What should I keep in my stage bag?
Basics for every performer
Start with hydration and vocal care: a water bottle with a straw (to avoid smudging lipstick), throat lozenges or honey, and maybe a personal steamer if you sing. For quick costume repairs, include safety pins in a few sizes, double-sided tape, a mini sewing kit with black and white thread, and a lint roller. A small mirror, blotting papers, and your makeup touch-up items are also standard.
Don't forget personal comfort: tissues, hand sanitizer, granola bars or a quick snack, and any medications you might need. If you use in-ear monitors or a microphone, pack extra batteries and a small multi-tool. A headlamp or small flashlight helps in dark wings.

Role-specific and venue-specific items
Dancers might add blister bandages, toe tape, and a foam roller. Actors in heavy costumes may need cooling towels or a small fan. Musicians often carry extra strings, reeds, capos, and a tuner. Check with your stage manager or wardrobe department—some venues provide certain supplies, so you don't need to duplicate.
Keep your bag organized with small pouches or labels so you can find things in a hurry. A clear plastic pouch for liquids prevents leaks from ruining everything else. Restock after every show so you're never caught empty-handed.
Common mistakes
- Packing too much and creating a heavy, disorganized bag you can't search quickly.
- Assuming the venue will have basics like safety pins or tape—many don't.
- Forgetting to restock after a show, so you're missing items at the next performance.
