How do I deal with a quick costume change?
Preparation and planning
Start by mapping out exactly what comes off and what goes on, in order. Use Velcro, magnets, snaps, or zippers instead of tiny buttons or hooks. If you have a dresser, they can help with back zips and tricky fastenings. If not, practice solo until you can do it by feel.
Preset your next costume on a chair or rack in the order you'll put it on: shoes first, then pants, then top, etc. Lay out any accessories—jewelry, hats, gloves—in the same order. A quick-change station with a mirror, baby wipes, and deodorant can save time.
- Use quick-release closures: Velcro, magnets, snaps, elastic.
- Preset costume pieces in the order you'll put them on.
- Keep a small mirror and wipes at the change station.
- Label or color-code costume pieces if you have multiple changes.
During the change
Breathe and stay calm—rushing leads to mistakes. Step into your preset space, take off the old costume in one motion if possible, and put on the new one in the reverse order. If you have a dresser, let them handle the back while you do the front.
Use the time you have: if you have 30 seconds, focus on the most visible parts first. If you have a minute, you can be more thorough. Practice with a timer to see how long it actually takes, then add a buffer.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until the last second to start the change, causing panic and missed cues.
- Wearing complicated fastenings that are hard to undo under pressure.
- Not rehearsing the change in costume, so you discover problems only during the show.
