Can I wear my own shoes during a performance?
Ask the director or costume team
The costume designer or director usually decides footwear, because shoes affect the silhouette, the sound on the floor, and safety during movement. Some shows let performers wear their own black shoes or dance shoes. Others need specific styles or heel heights.
Confirm early, ideally at the first fitting. A quick message asking which shoes are allowed can save you from buying a pair that gets rejected.
If the director approves a style, keep that exact pair for the whole run so your movement and height stay the same from one performance to the next.
Pick shoes that work for the show
If you must choose your own, pick shoes that are broken in and comfortable for long stretches of standing or dancing. Test them on the stage floor when you can, since a slick or rough surface changes how you move. Avoid new shoes on opening night.
Keep a second pair backup in your bag in case a blister or a heel issue shows up during the run.
If the production involves stairs, ladders, or quick entrances, mention that to the director early, since it can change what is safe to wear.
- Confirm footwear at the first fitting
- Break in shoes before the first full run
- Test grip on the actual stage floor
- Keep a backup pair in your bag
Common mistakes
- Buying brand new shoes and wearing them for the first time on opening night.
- Assuming any comfortable shoe is allowed without checking the costume notes.
