How do I deal with stage fright during a live show?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerUse grounding techniques like slow breathing and focusing on your material. Acknowledge the fear, then shift attention to the audience and the moment.

In-the-moment techniques

When panic hits mid-performance, slow your exhale. Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6–8. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and can reduce heart rate within a minute or two.

Ground yourself physically: feel your feet on the floor, notice the weight of your instrument, or press your thumb into your palm. These sensations pull you out of spiraling thoughts.

If you can, pause. A brief silence while you take a breath is rarely noticed by the audience. It gives you a moment to reset.

  • Slow, deep exhales
  • Feel your feet on the stage
  • Focus on one friendly face
  • Remind yourself: 'I know this'
  • Sip water if you have it

Shift your focus outward

Stage fright often comes from self-focused attention—worrying about how you look or sound. Try to redirect your attention to the audience, the story of the song, or the meaning of the lyrics.

If you're in a band, make eye contact with a bandmate. A shared nod or smile can break the isolation of fear.

Remember that the audience wants you to succeed. They're not waiting for you to fail; they're there to enjoy the performance.

Long-term strategies

The more you perform, the more familiar the situation becomes. Repeated exposure reduces anxiety over time.

Prepare thoroughly. Knowing your material cold gives you confidence. Practice performing in front of small groups before big ones.

Consider talking to a therapist who specializes in performance anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has good evidence for anxiety disorders.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to fight the fear—accepting it as normal adrenaline can make it less overwhelming.
  • Apologizing to the audience for being nervous, which draws attention to it.
  • Avoiding performances altogether, which makes the fear worse next time.
